Altaro VM Backup Best Practices

Altaro VM Backup is another product that can be used to protect virtual environments. It is a simple backup solution.

As a guideline, you should consider the following factors when choosing the best backup solution for your environment: size, number and type of virtual infrastructure.

Altaro VM Backup

Altaro VM Backup, currently available in version 7.5, is a low-cost, high-performance backup solution that can be used in small and medium-sized environments. It supports both VMware virtual platforms and Hyper-V. It is only available for Windows OS and requires no software dependencies such as MS SQL.

It is simple to use, and it has an intuitive interface that makes it easy to manage the backup strategy. You can also monitor and manage all Altaro VMware Backup installations using one cloud console with the Altaro Virtual Backup Cloud Management Console.

License and all editions

Licenses are per physical host, with limitless sockets/CPUs. Support is limited for the first year.

Altaro VM Backup comes in three versions:

Standard - You can backup up to five VMs per host.

Pro - unlimited number of virtual machines per host can be back up. It also supports Exchange item restore, deduplication and boot from backup. Version Pro also supports clusters and vCenter.

Enterprise - All features available when you add the Cloud Management Console or the Cloud Backup To Azure features.

Altaro comes with a free edition that allows you to backup up to 2 virtual machines per host. Altaro VM Backup offers a 30-day free trial.

Backup features

Altaro uses snapshot technology to perform an image-based backup. All VM backups are always incrementals. Altaro also uses Changed Block Tracking technology to identify changed data and transfer it to the repository. The Augmented Inline Duplication technology is a unique solution that optimizes data written to storage. This reduces backup storage requirements and speeds up backups.

VM Backup performs consistent application backups of your VMs using guest VSS services. This includes all VSS Writers that are running within the Guest VM. When the backup is complete, the application will also trim transaction logs for products like MS SQL and Exchange.

Backup to Boot

Altaro has the Boot from Backup feature, which allows you to boot a VM from a backup location without having to restore the entire backup. It also supports the granular restoration of files, VMs and Exchange items.

Backups Offsite and to the Cloud

Backups can be sent off site to comply with backup rule 3-2-1 or to an Azure Blob storage account using the Backup Copy jobs. Data transfer can be speeded up over slow WAN using the WAN Accelerator component.

Replication

To quickly recover mission-critical VMs, VMs may be copied to an external location for disaster recovery protection, or to offsite storage via the Internet connection. The WAN Acceleration can speed up transfers and enable drive swap rotation on select drives.

Backups should be tested

Verifying backups is essential to ensure that VMs are recoverable from backups and avoid damage. You can verify the integrity of your backup data automatically by using the Test & Validate Backup feature.

Verify Backup Folders

Perform a full test restore

The Backup Health Monitor is a feature that helps to ensure backups are safe and sound. It detects possible corruption in your backup storage and repairs it as part of the next backup job.
